Build in the 1st-century BC, Herod the Great's Palace had a large central courtyard. In Mark 15:16, the Greek word aulē is used, meaning "courtyard".

This was probably the place where Jesus was scourged.

Between the bema and Herod’s Palace, where Pontius Pilate resided, there was an Essene Gate. Today, it is bricked up.
